Against patriarchy and war – Rojava’s women are building their own future
In war-torn northern Syria, something unexpected is emerging: hope. In the midst of ruins, threats and deprivation, the women of Rojava are standing their ground with remarkable determination. They are establishing villages, educating children and setting up workshops, while also defending their lives and a vision of freedom and equality. In his documentary, director Robert Krieg showcases the everyday survival and extraordinary courage of self-empowerment in a region that receives little worldwide attention. This is a moving documentary about the quiet but unstoppable awakening of a new society led by women.
This documentary provides an impressive insight into the lives of women who have taken control of their own destiny in Rojava, an autonomously administered region in northern and eastern Syria. Despite war, destruction and political uncertainty, they are unwavering in their fight for independence and a democratic, grassroots society.
The film’s protagonists – including the tech-savvy Argin, the artisan Jehan, single mother Delal, versatile Sidan, taekwondo teacher Ghoufran, and deaf silk embroiderer Hiba – represent a new generation of courageous women. Each of them forges her own path, utilises her abilities, and overcomes personal and social hurdles.
Through calm yet powerful imagery, the film depicts lived solidarity and resilience, and the construction of a peaceful future beyond patriarchal structures and in spite of the most adverse circumstances.
